BMFTR-Project KAHR for Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia: Climate Adaptation, Flooding and Resilience

About Us

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig aims to use interdisciplinary research to identify ways to reconcile a healthy environment with societal development. The Environmental Risks and Extreme Events Working Group in the Department of Urban and Environmental Sociology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ (Leipzig) conducts research on the social dimension of climate change and its consequences. The group examines long-term societal resilience and adaptation dynamics and how these interact with political, economic, and planning factors. At the local level, the focus is primarily on analyzing perceptions of environmental risks and extreme events, as well as various adaptation and prevention measures. The goal is to identify the causes and consequences of conflicts and polarization in flood prevention and to develop practical solutions.

Our Goals in KAHR 2.0

The UFZ is investigating how various societal stakeholders perceive flood risks and what expectations they have regarding technical and natural flood protection measures. The study focuses on affected municipalities, households, businesses, and representatives of the water management sector in the upper and lower reaches of rivers. The analysis also examines issues of equity, such as the extent to which and how perceived advantages and disadvantages of flood protection measures differ between upstream and downstream regions. The study is based on interviews with various stakeholders, which are systematically evaluated and compared. The goal is to better understand which measures are perceived as effective, fair, and socially acceptable.
