About Us
As a leading center for spatial sustainability sciences, we develop cross-scale information bases, analytical tools, and knowledge, as well as policy and planning instruments that strengthen adaptive and transformative capacities in spatial contexts. Our research focuses on landscapes, the built environment, land use, and economic interactions to analyze and compare their development and transformation, particularly within the spatial contexts of neighborhoods, cities, and metropolitan areas; urbanized and rural areas; as well as regions and countries—including cross-border areas. Given the complexity and dynamism of our spatial research subject, we employ integrated mono-, inter-, and transdisciplinary research approaches and promote their further development. To develop a comprehensive understanding while also examining individual aspects in greater depth, we devise interdisciplinary research designs, drawing on disciplinary perspectives as well.
Our Goals in KAHR 2.0
The aim of our contribution to this research project is to examine the potential and experiences to date with legal provisions for climate-resilient reconstruction, particularly Section 246c of the German Building Code (BauGB), the Federal Spatial Planning Plan for Flood Protection (BRPH), and the Federal Climate Adaptation Act (KAnG), in selected municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, and to discuss these findings with practitioners. The findings are intended to help assess the impact of the aforementioned legal provisions and to support lawmakers in reviewing and, where necessary, further developing the legal framework for climate-resilient reconstruction. In addition, the project results will be disseminated through scholarly publications, conferences, and continuing education programs, and integrated into university teaching. In this way, the project contributes to addressing current socio-ecological challenges and promoting transformative spatial development.
