BMFTR-Project KAHR for Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia: Climate Adaptation, Flooding and Resilience

About Us

The flood disaster on July 14–15, 2021, affected approximately 42,000 people in the Ahr Valley and adjacent side valleys; 17,000 of those affected lost all their belongings immediately. Nearly 9,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, including schools, childcare facilities, senior care homes, and hospitals. 135 people lost their lives, one person is still missing, and approximately 700 were injured. Municipalities and other public infrastructure providers have submitted over 2,600 projects to the reconstruction fund; the estimated damage to public infrastructure amounts to approximately €3.8 billion.

Since the disaster, various departments within the district administration have been working on the reconstruction effort. In particular, the departments of Flood Resilience and Reconstruction Coordination, Spatial Planning, Climate Protection, Agriculture, Environment, and the in-house School and Building Management division are focusing on sustainable reconstruction. In addition to implementing natural measures, such as the rehabilitation and restoration of the Ahr riverbed, the Ahrweiler District Administration is focusing in particular on public facilities and infrastructure projects.

Our Goals in KAHR 2.0

In addition to coordinating organizational and administrative processes, such as grant applications, funding management, and the coordination of measures for public infrastructure projects, the District of Ahrweiler also facilitates collaboration and dialogue among affected parties, residents, policymakers, and the general public.

In the reconstruction effort, the goal is a practical, sustainable, and scientifically sound process that advances the region and its residents. Optimized flood prevention at all levels is the central concern. To this end, the various stakeholders are called upon to act, making networking and communication among the relevant stakeholders in the Ahr Valley essential.
