About Us
The Civil Engineering program within the Department of Construction, Art, and Materials offers a wide range of interdisciplinary research projects in addition to teaching in various construction-related degree programs. The “Water, Environment, Climate” research focus addresses the KAHR project as well as other interdisciplinary and international research projects.
Focus lies on AI-based developments for heavy rain and flash flood prevention, the relationship between snowmelt and soil moisture in Alpine watersheds, the influence of various parameters on the degree-day factor to improve snowmelt prediction models, the minimization of damage caused by heavy rain and flash flood events and the utilization of heavy rain in water-scarce regions of Jordan.
In addition, the university serves as the headquarters of the Kompetenznetzwerk „Wissenschaft für den Wiederaufbau“, an initiative of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in collaboration with its universities. The network aims to bring together the scientific expertise of the state’s research institutions in crisis response and reconstruction to support the sustainable, future-proof, climate-adapted, and resilient development of the Ahr Valley and other areas in Rhineland-Palatinate affected by the flood disaster.
Our Goals in KAHR 2.0
Within the KAHR 2.0 project, bauen-kunst-werkstoffe aims to develop a decision-making system for determining the optimal structural measures along waterways, in open areas, and for property protection. This involves identifying effective structural measures based on various input parameters, such as proximity to water bodies, flow velocity, water depth, floating debris accumulation, and the objective (e.g., water retention, emergency waterways, property protection). As part of this process, the measures and tools suitable for the specific problem at hand are to be selected from among possible and available solutions. In doing so, consideration must be given not only to the source of a flood but also to the floodplain and the water body. Furthermore, the department focuses on natural water retention and the reduction of soil erosion across the landscape, e.g., through renewable raw materials (such as Miscanthus) and their use as building materials.
